History

We are Galena's community school

A cornerstone of Galena’s history and pride, Sidney C. Huntington School serves local children from Pre-K through 8th grade. When students enter 9th grade, SHS High School and Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA) combine resources to provide rich academic and CTE pathways that support each student’s personal, educational, and career goals.

Our Story

Education

We strive to educate the whole student

SHS is working hard to provide a high-quality education that truly focuses on helping students flourish. 

Our school mascot, the Galena Hawk, embodies courage, strength, and perseverance. Students can channel that spirit through a wide range of activities and athletics, including Cross-Country Running, Wrestling, Volleyball, Basketball, Native Youth Olympics, and our newest offerings: Swimming and E-Sports.

Beyond sports, students can take part in fall and spring drama productions, annual travel opportunities, learning academies, student government, and a variety of leadership roles to round out their comprehensive education.

Culture

We honor and preserve culture on a daily basis

Students at SHS have opportunities to learn traditional Alaska Native singing and dancing, beading, Denaakk'e language, and subsistence traditions that celebrate and honor Alaska’s rich cultural heritage.

Outside the classroom, students eagerly and routinely participate in local community events, volunteer at the Elders Center, and help support their neighbors by chopping wood, sharing in their subsistence harvest, engaging in the outdoors, and simply by spreading youthful joy to each of us!
